GaleNet FAQ and Tech Tips

GBR URL Change:

We've made some exciting enhancements to Gale Business Resources (GBR) that require some immediate and simple action from GBR subscribers only.

Immediate:

Here's what you need to know:
  1. The URL(s)  you currently use to access GBR will change.
  2. These old URLs will continue to work.  You will be automatically forwarded to the new URLs on GaleNet.  the new list of URLs for IP and User Name and Password customers is listed below.
  3. The advantage in changing your links is that you will then bypass the jump page, speeding up your access.

Simple:

Here's what you need to do about it:
  1. Change Bookmarks and Links
  2. IP Authentication
If you subscribe to Gale Business Resources (GBR) change any bookmarks or embedded links to their new URL(s):

    http://www.galenet.com/servlet/GBR

    User Name and Password Access
The URL is different than for IP access:

    http://www.galenet.com/servlet/GBR?q= YourUserID

You will need to replace the YourUserID with your actual user name for GaleNet.

  3. If you have additional questions, contact  Gale Customer Technical Care .

GaleNet Access Methods:

GaleNet is a subscription based information product. Your organization needs to be a registered, licensed customer to access GaleNet, even for trial subscriptions. Contact your Gale Electronic Sales Representative to subscribe or to start a free trial subscription at 1-800-877-4253.

Customers are authenticated to access GaleNet in one of three ways:

1. Authenticate automatically via your unique IP (Internet Protocol) address.
Most customers are automatically authenticated via IP address. When you enter a GaleNet database, our server automatically checks the workstation IP address and verifies you are a licensed customer. With IP authentication you conduct your searches without being prompted for a password or user ID. Your Network Administrator provides your IP addresses or range of addresses to a Gale sales representative when they are first setting up the subscription.

If you were prompted for a USER ID and password in error, call your organization's network administrator to verify your workstation is included in the list of valid IP addresses given to Gale. Your network administrator can also advise you if your organization is experiencing any trouble with internet connections.

2. Authenticate via User ID and password.
If IP authentication won't work for your institution, then access to GaleNet can be accomplished through a Username/Password pair that is assigned to your library.

3. Authenticate via Gale's Remote Patron Authentication System (RPAS).
GaleNet now offers the Remote Patron Authentication System. With RPAS your patrons can access your library's GaleNet subscriptions from their home, on the road, anytime and anywhere. Contact your Sales Representative for details on this service.

Network Administrators
If you are a Network Administrator and are having trouble accessing GaleNet, please call Gale Technical Support at 1-800-457-4253. Technical Support will need to know your IP addresses or range of addresses, your DNS and the type and version of browser software you are using to access GaleNet. We also will need to know any error messages that Netscape or your browser is reporting. Lynx browser users should be sure to use the latest version of Lynx. Please call Gale Technical Support with a IP address of a workstation that is unable to access GaleNet. You may call or Email us at techsupp@gale.com .

GaleNet URLs:

All customers may use http://galenet.gale.com/ to access their Gale Databases. Some customers request the direct URL to access a single GaleNet database for menus or library web pages or even bookmarks. You can link straight to any database.

1. Customer Accessing via registered IP addresses can use these direct URLs.

2. Customers using assigned User ID and password can use these direct URLs.
